Hello, all! Welcome to my brand new fic LJ. Obviously it's not fully launched yet, but I'll be using it to post more stories while I work on Dead Boyfriend's overhaul.
While Dead Boyfriend is being retooled I've had several ideas for weblit serials that might tide people over in the meantime. For now, I plan to launch the one with the most interest. It will be in a more typical weblit style with slightly shorter chapters more often. Anyway, these are the three kicking around in my brain so far. Note that none of the titles are final.
Azrael
In a nutshell: A mystical vampire-killing hero is born each generation. Oh, and he's always gay.
Atmosphere: Angsty teen snark with gothic overtones
Set-Up: Evander Warrick is a typical gay geek outcast in his small rural high school. At least, he always thought so until he starts having weird dreams and weapons appear in his locker out of nowhere. Is it possible his dreams are true? Is he really the embodied Angel of Death complete with vampire-slaying superpowers? And who's the hot new senior boy who seems strangely interested in Evan?
Notes: I affectionately refer to this as Totally Not Gay Buffy in my head. While there would be definite homages to the Slayer mythos, at the same time it would be totally its own thing born from my desire for a gay hero narrative. The chosen one in this world doesn't "just happen" to be gay; the chosen is always gay. And he kills vampires a lot.
As Yet Untitled Vampires-As-Unseelie Series
In a nutshell: A vampire, a harpy, and their human girlfriend
Atmosphere: Fantasy violence and outrageous swearing with a dash of relationship drama
Set-Up: Nerissa has been dating Duncan for a few months and it's going great. Then an "old friend" of Duncan's shows up and promptly tries to kill them. Turns out her boyfriend is a warrior of the faery realm who abandoned his post, and now the harpy--as an agent of faery justice--has come to claim retribution for Duncan's broken oaths. But that might be the least of their worries. Something strange is happening in town, something that seems determined to pull Nerissa, Duncan, and even the harpy straight into the middle of it.
Notes: This is probably the most "soapish" idea I've ever had, though I'm strangely fond of it regardless. The main thrust of the series, at least for the first arc, would be the various relationships between the main characters. The harpy (whose name will be something like Jeth, Jath, or possibly Zath) and Duncan go way back, like a thousand years back, before the vampire tired of his duties and split for the human world. So not only is the harpy out for justice, he also has a personal ax to grind. Caught between them is Nerissa, who despairs of ever knowing Duncan better than Jath does. While the three of them are wading around in their emotional bullshit they stumble upon a conspiracy that might get them all killed, and then the fun really begins.
Here Be Dragons (title totally not final)
In a nutshell: Dragon-descended school students try to save the world
Atmosphere: Quirky alternate universe
Set-Up: Once upon a time gods and dragons ruled supreme on the physical plain, until some of their number let it go to their heads and merrily made with the destruction. Before leaving the earthly dimension behind, and taking all their kind with them, the dragons bred with humans so that a tiny piece of their power would forever live on. But some of the nastier dragons didn't want to leave, and through taking human forms of their own were able to stay. Flashforward to the modern age and a group of dragon-bloods in Endreach, a coastal city in the Royal Republic of the Mother Isles. They've learned that some of the old ones are no longer content to do their killing in the shadows. They want their old glory back. The old ones want to be dragons again, and if they devour enough human flesh they just might.
Notes: The characters in this, you guys. Each one is so delightfully fuckered up. Anyway, this is kind of a fantasy take on a superheroic team. Each of the dragon-bloods has inherited a different aspect of a dragon's power. One of them can reach right inside a human brain, one's body is superpowerful, and one of them can even belch out all-consuming dragon fire. They use these powers to stop dragons from eating humans and gaining their old forms back. All the while the team has to keep their secrets from their parents and avoid the Holy Paladins who are sworn to eradicate any and all draconian influences on earth. The story takes place on a "reverse earth" of sorts. The Royal Republic is an island nation to the west that has just lost control of a large section of its former holdings (the newly minted Nation of Liberated City-States) to the east. Tensions are still slightly high between "Reps" and "Statesmen".
So, those are the ideas on the table at the moment. Go ahead and drop some comments below to let me know how/what you feel about them, and definitely state which one grabs your immediate interest. Feel free to ask questions as well. Once I have kind of a general feel I'll put a poll up to get some hard numbers.
EDIT:
Just to clarify, other than my utter lack of get-it-together-ness there's no reason I can't eventually write all of them. Right now, I'm looking for the thing that strikes people the most.
Azrael has been in my head for a long time, and if I made a storyline about each of the ideas I have for it I would have story potential for years to come.
The second pitch interests me more in a sort of world-buildingish way. It would be fun to explore the dynamics of a supernatural world in which every creature is a faery of some kind.
Modern fantasy is already super famous in weblit circles, of course, and Dragons would be kind of in the same vein while also being strangely sit-com like. You know, that old sitcom cliche of dragons and cannibalism.
